Mrs B complained about the care and treatment provided by Hywel Dda University Health Board (“the Health Board”) to her late husband, Mr B. Specifically the investigation considered whether the clinical management of Mr B’s presenting symptoms between 25 and 27 March 2025 was appropriate, timely and in keeping with relevant guidance.
In particular whether an Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (“ERCP” – an examination of the pancreatic and bile ducts using a thin tube with a light and camera on the end) should have been carried out.
The investigation found that it was appropriate to discharge Mr B without an ERCP being carried out. It was reasonable for clinicians to consider how the potential risks to Mr B from this procedure could be mitigated.
His presentation on 27 March did not require him to remain in hospital whilst these considerations took place. Mrs B’s complaint was not upheld.
