Mrs A complained about the standard of care she received at the University Hospital of Wales (“the Hospital”). Specifically, she complained that a pulmonary embolism (“PE”) should have been diagnosed before she was discharged from the Hospital. This was diagnosed 4 days later at a different hospital.
The Ombudsman did not uphold the complaint. We found that the clinical management and investigation of Mrs A’s presenting symptoms at the Hospital was appropriate. The clinical findings did not indicate the presence of PE at that point. The decision to discharge Mrs A from the Hospital was reasonable.
