Case Against

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

Subject

Clinical treatment in hospital

Case Reference Number

202505471

Outcome

Not Upheld

Mrs C complained about the care and treatment received by her late mother, Mrs A, from the Health Board while admitted at University Hospital for Wales in October 2024. The investigation considered whether appropriate care and treatment was provided during her admission, particularly in relation to the management of Mrs A’s heart failure and oxygen levels. It also considered whether Mrs A’s subsequent discharge was appropriate.

The Ombudsman found that, on balance, appropriate care and treatment was provided during Mrs A’s admission. Oxygen levels were appropriately managed and there was no compelling evidence that she experienced any deterioration of her heart failure. Neither was there anything to indicate that Mrs A was on the verge of significant decline following her discharge. The discharge was therefore appropriate. The Ombudsman did not uphold either complaint.
