Miss A complained about her mother, Mrs B’s management and care at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd (“the Hospital”) and whether, in May 2025, her mother should have undergone an additional scan of her spine before she was discharged. Following a later MRI scan at another hospital, Miss A’s mother was found to have a spinal fracture, and she is now paralysed from the waist down.
The Ombudsman did not uphold Miss A’s complaint. The Ombudsman’s investigation concluded that given Mrs B’s clinical presentation at the time, there was no clinical reason that would have warranted her having a full spinal MRI while in the Hospital. Therefore, an additional full spinal MRI was not warranted. It was only on 9 July, following changes in Mrs B’s clinical presentation, that the clinical indications for a full spinal MRI occurred.
